A tour of some of the worlds more interesting data centers, By

Even if you aren't a data center geek there is still some great stories here. Through a series of interviews, you are taken on a tour of some of the world's most unique data centers, from an underground former nuclear bunker in downtown Stockholm to ones that are solar and geothermal powered. There are discussions about the ways that the data center can leverage the local climate to save on cooling and how Facebook builds its computers to its own specs, squeezing every bit of efficiency out of them.Compared to the hatch job of a recent series of New York Times feature articles, this is a book well worth reading and full of insights and innovative ways that will influence the next decade's worth of data center designs.

Having built out a small business data center and remodeled another two, this was very interesting. I love the security by obscurity that most major data centers deploy. A lot of huge installations look like the back of a Walmart, until you get into one and then it feels like you're in the Matrix! This book goes into the art of powering and cooling some of the most technologically advanced data centers in the world, and the back bone of the information super highway! Very cool.

Stunning pictures, I would love to work in some of these places -- especially the James Bond cave (former nuclear bunker) and the chapel (now a supercomputing facility). Tremendous variety. Purpose-built structures on flat land in the middle of North America, historic buildings re-purposed, and that cave. Text has interviews with the people who designed and operate the facilities, from which we can learn a great deal about the practical issues they had to solve with their designs. Power, cooling, tornado protection, etc., etc., are all discussed. A major tradeoff is how far apart to put the primary and secondary data centers: too close together and there is higher risk of losing both to a common disaster. But having them fairly close together has major advantages: a low-latency dark fiber link allows operating them as though they are a single facility, and staff are a short drive from either site.
