Indispensable as both a router configuration guide and a preparation tool for the CCNP BSCI exam, CCNP Practical Studies: Routing will prepare you for the exam and give you the hands-on experience to apply your knowledge on the job. CCNP Practical Studies: Routing provides you with routing and configuration information from IP basics to advanced routing concepts and protocols, such as BGP and IS-IS, which is the newest addition to the BSCI exam. Each chapter focuses on a specific routing technology or protocol with a battery of scenarios and practical exercises that you can either configure using your home, work, or remote-access lab equipment or follow along by reviewing the book's example tasks. The five lab scenarios in each chapter serve to challenge your understanding of the chapter topics and measure your aptitude as a CCNP candidate, while providing concrete examples of the challenges faced in real-world configuration.

CCNP Practical Studies: Routing provides you with practical information on all of the important concepts central to the CCNP Routing exam, including basic and advanced BGP and OSPF, EIGRP, route reflectors, IP routing principles, and IS-IS. Begin with basic lab scenarios that cover displaying and analyzing IP routing tables and using show and debug commands. Then graduate to more advanced lab scenarios, such as routing between a classful and a classless network; configuring VLSM; and working with multihomed BGP and connections to ISPs. Lab scenarios at the end of the book take you step-by-step through route optimization and redistribution. This book also contains a bonus CCIE®-level lab, which takes you beyond the professional level labs and onto the next step in becoming a hands-on routing expert.

Whether you are seeking practical knowledge to enhance your preparation for the CCNP BSCI exam or you are a newly minted CCNP looking for hands-on experience to hone your on-the-job skills, CCNP Practical Studies: Routing has what you need to take your practical routing skills to the next level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you want to get your hands dirty, October 6, 2002

This review is from: CCNP Practical Studies: Routing (Hardcover)
CCNP Practical Studies: Routing skips over all the ISO, TCP/IP and Basic Subnetting chapters that appear in every network book printed since the invention of the Cisco router... If you are reading this book you probably don't need them anyway. It covers Subnetting and VLSM in context of route summarization only.

The practicals are labs that you can do if you have the equipment. If you don't have the equipment, there are all the screenscapes you would normally see on the router console printed in the book. The only complaint I have about the book is that there is no "suggested equipment" list that lets you know what equipment is used throughout the exercises. I don't think the author expected all the configurations to be done in a home lab as he suggests a 6509 as the switch used in CCNP Routing Self-Study Lab. It would definitely help us crazyfolk that scour ebay for network equipment to keep next to our stereo, TV, and entertainment center.

Practicals included:

Hi

This book contains many mistakes but does fill a gap for those wanting to prepare for the CCNP with hands-on experience.

I actually learned a lot from the mistakes in this book. But when you're studying on your own and trying to build your confidence on routing it is really disconcerting to not be able to reach the same results as the book. It's only with lots more reading (a good thing!) that you discover the screen output in the book isn't accurate!

I think with the Errata in hand (or preferably a reprinted edition) this is still a book worth having but 4/5 star reviewers must not have followed the exercises on real equipment!

This review is from: CCNP Practical Studies: Routing (Hardcover)
This book has alot of good exercises which illustrate useful and valuable concepts and their implementation.

However, there are many, many inconsistancies between the config files, the output from show commands, and the figures. A typical example is Figure 5-5 on page 236. R4 in the figure has two serial connections but the interface addresses are not shown on the figure. In the config file for R4 on page 244, only one serial interface has been configured. In some labs, the output from sample show commands includes intefaces or networks not configured in the figures or config files.

I don't think I have worked through any lab in this book involving more than two routers which does not have this type of error. I think that the author has done a good job choosing which concepts to illustrate and then coming up with some labs to illustrate them. Too bad that no one got the labs actually fully configured and working before taking the screen captures. The result is... Read more

Praise For CCNP Practical Studies: Routing

"Newly introduced to the Cisco Press certification and training line is the Practical Studies series, which provides users with a self-study resource for obtaining practical hands-on experience. These learning resources are more relevant now that simulation-based questions have been added to the CCNA and CCNP Routing, BSCI, and Remote Access Exams to test a candidate’s hands-on networking skills. A full line of CCNP Practical Studies books that address each of the four required exams will be published by Cisco Press..."
- Cisco World Online, September 9, 2002, now Enterprise Networking Magazine

"School may be out for the summer, but network pros who are working to obtain Cisco certification may not want to put their quest on hold. Just in time for beach reading, Cisco Press has rolled out a new line of self-study materials to help you prepare for the Cisco Certified Network Professional exams. Cisco Press offers official CCNP 600 series self-study resources. New to the lineup is the Practical Studies series, which gives users a resource for gaining practical hands-on experience. CCNP Practical Studies: Routing is the first of four books in the series for CCNP preparation. The book provides network lab scenarios for use with home or lab networks or simulated environment. ...Three more Practical Studies books that target specific exams are due within the next year."
- Network World E-newsletter, July 8, 2002

"When preparing for IT certification exams like Cisco's CCNP exam, the next best thing to hands-on practice with networking gear is scenarios. This book (CCNP Practical Studies: Routing) is an excellent complement to CCNP courses and study guides and provides candidates with dozens of scenarios covering topics like IP, routing, OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP."
