The obvious goal for this book is to help users to pass Cisco IP Telephony (CIPT) exam (642-444). However, it can also server as a quick reference guide to help preparing users to install, configure and maintain a Cisco IP Telephony solution. The book does focus primarily on Cisco CallManager version 4.1 and is definitely not for beginners. The book has 34 chapters where each one of them explains the concept and configuration in a concise and clear way and helps the readers understand the subject easily. It opens with Cisco Unified Communications concept and CallManager components. Chapter 2 and 3 discuss CallManager clustering, deployment, installation and upgrades. It covers Unified Call Manager version 6.0+, so be sure which version you need. The basic concept is simple, send your voice communications over the internet using packet switching is a lot cheaper than the traditional Bell system approach of circuit switching where your circuit is vastly underused. Cisco has put their products together into a product line around their Cisco Unified CallManager product, a part of the Cisco direction called AVVID: Architecture for Voice, Video, and Integrated Data. While this book has the obvious goal of getting you to pass the Cisco IP Telephony (CIPT - 642-444) exam, it goes beyond what most 'exam cram' books do and will make you much more knowledgable about actually working with the equipment and software. The book gives you a complete background rather than just a list of questions and canned answers.
